Introduction
At ETERESHOP, we work hard to bring any costume or installation idea to life. Even if we haven’t made something similar before, our developer team is dedicated to experimenting with new materials and technologies. We persistently try different approaches until we achieve the best possible result. In a blog section called “How We Did It” we provide examples of our projects to illustrate our willingness to create something new according to your desires.
Custom Order and Inspiration for a Custom Dragonfly Outfit
Recently we got a request from one of our loyal customers to create a cosplay dragonfly costume. First images used for inspiration represented elfish-like fantasy creatures.
Later we turned to Midjourney for AI to help us generate possible product images. Color, material texture (mirror tiles and beads) were added according to the client’s request. This resulted in a pink dragonfly costume concept featuring a full-piece helmet, fantasy platform boots, and wings. Later we dropped the idea of creating large wings and resolved to small shoulder decoration resembling something between wings and spikes.
The client has chosen one of the images and expressed the desire to get the exact copy of it. Although usually we combine details from various sources including AI-generated images, this time we decided to experiment and see what we would get in the end.
Rendering and Selecting Materials and Technologies
The team started making the concept a reality once we got a picture that we can work with as a desirable design. The first step was to render an image in Clo3D to be able to edit the details (like mirror tiles and beads layout) on a 3D model and see how the cosplay dragonfly costume will look like on a real body and ensure that all design elements were aligned with the client’s vision.
The ETERESHOP team’s next task was selecting the appropriate materials to realize the design of a custom dragonfly outfit, focusing on both visual impact and ergonomics for the person who would wear this dragonfly costume.
Materials used for the custom dragonfly costume project:
- EVA foam – for the dragonfly helmet, overshoes and small decoration parts on the suit
- Pink latex fabric – to cover EVA foam on the hemet, overshoes and small parts
- Mirror tiles – to decorate the dragonfly catsuit
- Plastic – with vacuum forming for dragonfly eyes and 3D printed for slots on the helmet
- Biflex – for the gray catsuit
- 3D printed beads (on fabric) – to decorate the catsuit and the pink helmet
Technologies used for the pink custom dragonfly outfit:
- Vacuum forming – to create large dragonfly eyes.
- 3D modeling of small costume details like beads and for making patterns for EVA foam.
- Covering EVA foam with pink latex fabric.
- 3D printing for beads and other small details of the costume, like the nose on the helmet.
The Creation Process: Design in Detail
The catsuit was decorated with pink and silver mirror tiles, small EVA foam parts covered in pink latex fabric and plastic beads. Initially, the design of a catsuit included scarab-colored mirror tiles, but later they were replaced with silver ones, just like it was depicted on the original AI-generated image.
Pink and golden beads were printed on transparent fabric and then glued over the helmet and the cosplay dragonfly costume so that we wouldn’t need to glue them one by one but rather as one big piece.
The pink helmet and shoe covers were made of EVA foam covered with pink latex fabric. Pink mirror shoe covers have two variations that can be worn on both platform\ high-heel boots or flat shoes up to the client’s need. To create large dragonfly eyes the team used vacuum forming and to make them look iridescent we resorted to chrome plating and painted the eyes blue.
AI-generated designs included large dragonfly wings, but we dropped this idea during the production process and the client expressed the desire to add just small wings-like decorations resembling spikes on shoulders of the dragonfly outfit.
The Final Result: Cosplay Dragonfly Costume
The final result looks stunning and resembles the initial AI-generated design a lot. It includes the full-piece helmet with metallic blue fly eyes, pink platform overshoes and small wings adorned with reflective mirror tiles.
Conclusion
Making the custom dragonfly costume was an exciting journey, from the initial idea to the finished piece. Moreover, this project shows how dedicated we are to realize imaginative concepts and making sure our clients are happy with the results. If you have a unique costume concept, we’d love to help you turn it into something spectacular.
